A step-by-step travel guide from Kolkata to Sagar Island, Kapil Muni Temple.
Gangasagar (Sagar Island) is located in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The island is separated from the mainland by the holy Muriganga River. Reaching the island involves traveling from Kolkata to the river bank (Kakdwip Lot 8 or Namkhana), crossing by vessel ferry to Kachuberia, and then driving 30 km to Kapil Muni Temple.
By Local Train: Take a local EMU train from Sealdah South Station (Kolkata) to Kakdwip or Namkhana railway station (takes approx 2 hours 15 mins). From Kakdwip station, take a Toto or auto to Lot No. 8 Jetty (approx 8 km).
By Bus: Direct WBTC/SBSTC buses depart daily from Esplanade (Kolkata) to Harwood Point / Lot No. 8 (approx 3 to 3.5 hours).
At Lot No. 8 Jetty, purchase passenger ferry tickets (nominal fare around ₹10 - ₹15). Government vessels and private mechanized launches operate regularly throughout the day from morning 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM (dependent on tide water levels). The river crossing to Kachuberia Jetty takes about 35 minutes.
After disembarking at Kachuberia, you will find continuous road transport options right outside the jetty gate:
• Sharing Toto / Auto / Jeep: Frequent sharing vehicles running directly to Kapil Muni temple road (approx ₹50 - ₹70 per person).
• Private Reserved Toto / Taxi: Convenient for families and elderly devotees (takes approx 45 minutes to 1 hour across 30 km smooth highway).
Our guest house is conveniently located on Kapil Muni Temple Road, only 2 minutes walking distance from the main temple gate. If you need any assistance upon arrival, call our front desk and our staff will guide your vehicle directly to our gate.
